Preparing your child for a hospital visit

A calm child recovers faster. Six practical things parents can do beforehand.

Children read our anxiety more accurately than our words. Preparation helps both of you.\n\nExplain honestly and simply what will happen, using words like "the doctor will listen to your chest" rather than vague reassurance. Bring a familiar comfort object. Schedule appointments outside nap times where possible. Let older children ask their own questions of the doctor.\n\nAvoid promising that nothing will hurt if a blood test is planned — instead explain that it will be quick and that you will stay with them throughout.
